Science Wānanga for the Ngāti Kahungunu ki Heretaunga have been delivered for the past six (6) years in partnership between Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga and Otago University, and largely supported by Hawke’s Bay DHB and Tūruki (under the Māori Health Workforce Strategy).
In 2017 ten (10) schools were invited to attend the fifth (5th) science wananga held at Waipatu Marae, Hastings however two (2) former participating schools declined due to previous commitments ( St Josephs’ Māori Girls College and Hastings Boys High), with the remaining eight (8) accepting the invitation, as follows:

Although the overall objective of Science Wānanga is to help address the educational inequities of the past by encouraging and supporting more Māori to participate, achieve and thereby contribute in science and health science, cultural competencies in this regard were a highlight for those first timers and added to the unexpected but successful outcomes.”
I’d also like to commend the Otago team for their respective expertise and congratulate them, particularly as the majority were first-timers to experience Te Ao Māori.

When answering “how has the wananga changed your thinking about sciences”;
- we need to keep our rivers clean for generations to come
- seeing what the chemicals can do, knowing what happens in our water
- it made me see that we can make a difference even if we don’t do science as a job
- how science people want to help the health & wellbeing of Aotearoa
- its made me realise the many opportunities you get within science
- it has opened my mind to think outside the box

- Important to have content – why we are learning something, also reinforced the importance of hands on tasks. Love the theme linked to our community
- It’s easy to do at kura and we need to do more! Doesn’t have to be expensive
- We now have more students engaged ow making the teaching easier
- I think wananga are so valuable for our akonga to learn within this environment than in a school environment
- Made it fun, interesting and relevant to our community
- Ehara au I te kaiako putaiao, hei o kua whakawhanui ake nga aronga kei hapai ake enei tauira
- It made me think about designing a unit to do school-wide at our kura
2018 Science Wananga
The latest and 6th Science Wānanga for Heretaunga was successfully delivered at Kahuranaki Marae, Te Hauke in September 2018. Again the noho marae and wananga were successful and enjoyed by all. To quote Hiria once more… “When it’s time to come to Heretaunga everyone sticks their hand up to come. It’s one of our favourite places go because we go to different marae and we are getting to see across the rohe, meet all the local whanau, hear stories and enjoy the manaaki. We love it!”.
Te Manaaki Taiao and Te Taiwhenua o Heretaunga will continue to pursue opportunities for Maori in science as we look to potential development in the noho marae programme and/ or other science intiatives in partnership with key stakeholders.
